Enter Projects Asia’s concept fuses 3D technology with local crafts and natural materials, to create a series of free-form yoga pods.
The contemplative, nature-based spaces feature Thai hardwood, palm leaves, rattan and black slate, and showcase artisanal skills which are at risk of disappearing.
The intervention is an illuminated tubular feature, which the architects suspended from the ceiling, and which meanders above curvy benches and four free-form yoga pods. By manipulating bamboo and wood in this soft, organic way, the design mimics the flow of the body.
At the same time, the design exposes these materials and skills in a new commercial setting, creating a respite from the capital’s slick artificiality. This positions Vikasa as a getaway from the urban jungle, an oasis within the city.
The 450sqm space comprises two public and two private pods, with a lobby area and luxury bathrooms integrated seamlessly into the layout. EPA designed floor-to-ceiling windows across the entire front façade, which flood the space with natural light.
“When the sun shines on the natural surfaces, one could be in a forest. It’s a return to the source of one’s soul,” says Patrick Keane, director of EPA.
Vikasa was winner of Dezeen’s Leisure and Wellness interior of the year, 2020. The judges commented: “The sustainable medium of handcrafted reed as a primary material, to weave a spatial narrative, is both clever and meaningful to the context – of the region and programme.”
